The American Branch's 2006 International Law Weekend 2006 will be held on Thursday-Saturday, October 26-28, 2006, at the Association of the Bar of the City of New York (42 West 44th St, New York, NY). The theme this year is "The Evolving World of International Law." The event will explore the rapid evolution of public and private international law and the resulting consequences for the global legal environment. In more than 20 panels, experts will lead interactive sessions dealing with such topics as the increasing importance of international courts, escalating tensions between state sovereignty and human rights, the reasons for and consequences of the U.S.'s changing relationships with the rest of the world, and the importance of professional organizations in holding a mirror to power.
Jose Alvarez, Hamilton Fish Professor of International Law & Diplomacy at Columbia University School of Law and President of the American Society of International Law, will deliver the luncheon address on Saturday, October 28.
On Friday, October 27, the New Zealand mission to the United Nations will host a reception. Pre-registration is required for this.
For further information, please contact the co-chairs, Prof. Peter K. Yu (peter_yu at msn.com) or Lorraine Brennan (lbrennan at uscib.org). Registration information is posted at the American Branch website, http://ambranch.org at: http://ambranch.org/archives/2006_ILW_agenda.pdf
