Dear ABILA members,

Valerie Epps and I, ABILA co-directors of studies, are excited to
announce the formation of the ABILA International Disability Law
Committee.

The Committee is looking for people with a passion for making a difference
in a rapidly-emerging area of international law. If that is you, please
contact Will Grignon at wgrignon at kirkland.com or (213) 680-8239.

In 2006, the United Nations adopted the Convention On The Rights Of
Persons With Disabilities in an attempt to provide a global and
transnational legal framework for the recognition and protection of the
human rights of disabled persons. Nevertheless, disabled persons, and
those who represent, serve, and employ them, face a bewildering patchwork
of national and sub-national paradigms and practices regarding disability
(mental, physical, medical, learning, functional, etc.).

The mission of the International Disability Law Committee is to serve as a
single, comprehensive, user-friendly, efficient, and effective entity that
will gather information, bring together disparate voices, encourage
dialogue, work towards understanding, and help to create workable
solutions and long-lasting change.

The International Disability Law Committee will serve as a:
• Forum for discussion, policy making, and problem solving
• Resource for legal information about disability law around the
world
• Source of scholarly writing and expert opinion
• Support for lawyers in different nations so they may pursue,
implement, and enforce disability rights in their respective jurisdictions

The International Disability Law Committee will focus on:
• Preparing written reports on aspects of international law
• Organizing panels for ABILA conferences
• Offering views in policy-making processes or in amicus briefs
• Developing stratagems and solutions for disability-related legal
issues
